Summer is the invitation we all need to relax and recharge our senses. At this particular time of the year I like to spread it throughout the house by picking lots of wild flowers that lift the spirits and light it up with scented jasmine candles that create great magic nights! After a long, cold, dark season plan now and take advantage of promotional prices at one of today’s most popular destinations: the Algarve.

Pleasures come in many ways – a dip in the sea, a picnic on the shore, a chilled gazpacho, a fragrant and sparkling wine served in a tall glass, a bowl of strawberries under a shady tree, an open-air music festival, sitting at an esplanade coolly observing the world as it goes by, and much, much more. And all under blue skies or all the colours of the sunset – gold, orange, yellow and copper that bring out the best of nature and the best in you. Algarve is only a short way from everything that has always fascinated you about.

I can not tell you how much inspiration I get from spring. The emerging colour, the sweet fragrance of flowers all over, fig trees sprouting big leaves and offering shelter to robins, lilacs ready to burst open. I just love this time of the year with summer fast approaching and already on the horizon. Daisies are dancing and bring us hope. Give me wings and I simply can fly and reach the sky. Algarve - a break away in this scenery can certainly do wonders for your soul.

A magic season

Worth a special trip, the fine weather and the views of the countryside all around are magnificent at the moment, with the feast of the almond tree blossoms, showering its pale pink flowers over the ground, with the exhilarating Atlantic in the distance.

Where on earth has this year gone? Anyway, I hope it has been a good one and that you have put together great plans for the year ahead. For me it has to start with acknowledging that my life is better if I don’t spend on things that merely fill the space. I also want my 2011 to be lived with passion and intention. What about yours? You want to put your best foot forward, and if getting away will improve your mood and you long for sun and warm days take in some rays and escape to the Algarve. Remember that the journey is the destination and appreciate each day fully.

The holiday season has been in full swing for a while and Christmas is only a few days away. I put together a whole list of projects and activities but it seems that December has gone far too quick for everything I had in mind. Anyway the most important right now is to connect with friends that we have lost in touch with, gather with our loved ones, and keep the precious memories of those not present... as well as to be grateful for so many things.
I hope you’ll enjoy all the moments, fragrances, sounds, and songs that generate Christmas in your heart.

Off-peak holidays

As the recession continues, with more cut backs and job losses, many people are still tightening their belts – but there are easy ways to save money when holidaying, and by taking advantage outside the peak season months of July and August can mean quite a substantial savings. Added to this, the weather can be just as good, although perhaps not quite so hot, and you don’t have to fight the crowds for a quiet holiday in September or October.

After the success of previous years, the Algarve Orchestra was back at the Fishermen Beach in Albufeira this August featuring classic music for another edition of «sons ardentes» - a partnership between the City Hall and the Portugal Tourism Board, as part of the music programme of Allgarve 2010. Classic music was played alongside a pyrotechnics and scenography show under the musical direction of maestro Osvaldo Ferreira accompanied by the voice of soprano Eduarda Melo.

The taste of the Algarve

Ingredients: 6 cloves of garlic – 1 bunch of fresh coriander – 2 kg clams – 150ml olive oil – salt to taste – lemon to taste.
Method: Soak the clams in lightly salted water for about three hours to remove sand and slit. Chop the garlic and heat in a large deep frying pan with half the chopped coriander and the olive oil. When they start sizzling, pour over the clams and cover the pan, shaking from time to time until the clams have opened. Sprinkle with the remaining roughly chopped coriander. Leave to simmer for a little. Remove from the heat and before serving freshen with some lemon juice. We recommend a bottle of chilled green wine.

Sarah, from Birmingham, who turned 29, was joined by a small group of family and friends for her birthday dinner while on holiday. From prawn’s entrée to perfectly medium rare tender and juicy steak, food was absolutely yummy. Other guests enjoyed lamb, and monk fish kebabs at restaurant «Lá em casa» - a spot with outdoor eating and nice décor, where food is always sublime, and that I trust enough to recommend anytime. Bon appetit everyone!

The old flower torch festival of São Brás de Alportel is all that remains of a once popular Easter celebration that took place throughout the Algarve.
On this religious day where Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ, this small town becomes alive with colour hosting a procession with flower torches. Visitors are also greeted with beautiful made carpets of fresh flowers along the main streets, swept and carpeted in rosemary, lavender and wild flowers, when women hang their finest bedcovers from their balconies and windows. A treat not to be missed if you’re around Easter time!

The season in review

I sure hope you all enjoyed Christmas as much as we did. It came and went so fast didn’t it? And as the clock ticks down toward the end of 2009, whether it was a good year or a year you’re happy to see come to an end, either way you have good reasons to celebrate because you’re still with us and a future is waiting for you. With the recession, loss of jobs, and tighter budgets, staying home these past holidays wasn’t so much of an option but a requirement for many of you. Anyway there’s just nothing like a blue sky, golden sands, and that beautiful green water of the Algarve to look forward to. I wish all of you nothing but health and happiness in the coming year. 2010 will certainly be the best!

Superb palace of Rococo architecture

Situated in the charming old village of Estói, nearby Faro, set in nearly ten acres, with French-inspired gardens, decorated with statues and trees, where former stables and cow sheds, were now converted into spaces for holding all sorts of events. The palace is decorated with panels of glazed tiles and wide glass windows open to the public following extensive renovations.

Sagres is situated at the most south westerly point of Europe. The present walls surrounding the area are the remains of a 17th Century fort built for Prince Henry the Navigator – evidence of his famous school. Blue tiles are everywhere in Portugal. They are used to beautify and dignify the buildings. They decorate everything from walls of churches, to palaces, ordinary houses, park seats, fountains, and railway stations. They often portray scenes from the history of the country, show its most ravishing sights, or simply serve as street signs, nameplates, or house numbers.
Although they are not a Portuguese invention (the use of glazed tiles began in Egypt), they have been used more imaginatively and consistently in Portugal than in any other nation. They became an art form, and by the 18th century no other European country was producing as many tiles for such a variety of purposes and in so many different designs. Today, they still remain a very important part of the country's architecture.

A popular legend in the Algarve is the one of the homesick Princess pining for her Northern home. Only when February came and she saw from her window the clouds of almond blossom was she reconciled to living in a Southern land. Her husband had ordered the planting of trees as far as the eye could see, to remind her of her beloved snow.
